Abstract

The province of Formosa is divided into two large ecoregions, the Humid Chaco and the Dry Chaco, whose differences are due to the pluviometric average which duplicate from one extreme to the other. In view of this situation, the objective of this study is to compare the values of SPEI in both regions in order to detect the recurrence and severity of the extreme events of flood and drought. The results showed that it is during winter that the most extreme events occur in both regions. However, the west region does not show these events in the period of the highest pluviometric average of the year, which proves that in both ecoregions the climate variability responds independently.
