Abstract

In the surroundings of Maimará, the morphogenesis corresponding to the semiarid environments is predominant. Here the physic weathering together with the mass removal, the water contribution through the concentrated runoff and the fluvial erosion generated geoforms corresponding to those environments. The climate of the area and the lithology eased the development of a particular geoform and at the same time of an azonal character considering the presence of environments of different climate conditions.

Tafonis can be observed in two topographic depressions located at the west of the aforementioned city, the Quebrada del Puente and other with no name, which is the place where this research was carried out, called Quebrada de los Tafonis from now on.

The tafonis studied showed differences regarding design and degree of development with cavities of different dimensions, causing a particular relief which contrasts with the surroundings.

Those tafonis are entirely generated due to the direct effect of the physic weathering, in this case thermoclastism degradation.

The wind activity has neither incidence nor participation in the generation and evolution of the tafonis studied in the area. It was another evidence that the wind action has no incidence in the generation of these geoforms.
