Abstract

This study aims to examine the public trajectory of one of the most prominent figures in southern Chaco, Argentina, during its period as a National Territory. It focuses on José Conrado Castells, who played an essential role in the development of this jurisdiction between 1923 and 1953. During this period, significant economic, demographic, and political transformations took place, fostering the emergence of a local leadership that not only responded to these changes but also supported—and at times propelled—the actions of figures such as Castells. After assessing the role of this leadership elite, the article analyzes the most salient aspects of Castells’s personality and public activity, highlighting the significance of his actions and legacy.
